Electrician Oklahoma City

Hello! Welcome to Electrician Oklahoma City.

Yes, I realize that is an odd name for a website, but there is a reason for choosing this particular combination of words.

You see, when a homeowner in Oklahoma City needs electrical work done, be it a simple addition of a light fixture in their bathroom or a complete electric panel upgrade, there is a pretty good chance that you will log on to your computer and type in: Electrician Oklahoma City… or maybe Oklahoma City Electricians in order to find a company to handle your needs.

And, I wanted you to find my website because unlike other sites that may pop up, I do not own my own electrical repair company.

I’m actually an impartial consumer who was once in your shoes and had a bad enough experience looking for and hiring local electricians that it motivated me enough to create this site to help protect you.

It was kind of my civic duty to do so!

Now, I am not going to bash any electrical outfit out there but I will make a solid recommendation of two very good electricians that are licensed, bonded, insured and that you can trust to take care of you.

In addition to this, I want to educate home owners on how their electrical system works and give you enough knowledge to confidently make a few minor repairs, or, if you are like many homeowners and scared to death of electricity, make an informed decision should you need to hire an electrical contractor in Oklahoma City to tackle a larger job.

So, if you have an electrical outlet that no longer has electricity coming out of it or a light that dims when the air conditioner comes on, or anything in between, this site is for you.

Before I got started in this epic quest to find a qualified electrician, I didn’t know a wire nut from my elbow. I did not know the difference between 120 volts and 240 volts, or what having a single phase electrical system meant… maybe you don’t either?

No worries! I will cover all of this at Electrician Oklahoma City. We will look at your circuit panel box and discuss what those breakers do and how the electricity is routed through your home.

I will show you how to test an outlet, fix a broken doorbell, and even how to install a GFCI in your bath or kitchen. GFCI stands for ground fault circuit interrupter and is actually an electrical outlet that should be used any where that you or an appliance can come into contact with water… You know, to protect you from the toaster in the bathtub scenario and all!

Most importantly though, this site will help you hire a Oklahoma City electrician that is honest and professional.

The last thing you need is to have some backwoods mechanic messing around with your electrical system and put you and your family in danger.

Also, the prices electrical contractors charge for various repair work is all over the board. You can get ripped off very easily when hiring out electrical work because most homeowners have no idea how much these repairs should cost… it is just not something we deal with very often.

And one word of warning. You cannot rely on an organization like the better Business Bureau to vouch for a company.

Most people are not aware of this, but the Better Business Bureau is not any type of official governing body like their name implies and they are actually paid by the businesses they represent! Can you say conflict of interest? Here is a very eye opening story about the BBB that you might want to check out.

It is also important that you know what organizations an electrician should belong to like the National Electrical Contractors Association, or NECA and what type of state contractor’s license they hold or does the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation, or DPOR, even know they exist?

Is the owner of the company a Master Electrician or just a guy/gal with a journeyman’s card who has run out of companies to get fired from and started his own business? If so, I doubt he/she has insurance and should something bad happen to your home you may be in for quite a “shock”.

Does your job require a permit and inspection? Will it be done up to city code? I could go on and on but you get the picture.

Hopefully after spending a few minutes at our site, Electrician Oklahoma City, you will be able to make an informed decision on who to hire for your electrical job or have the confidence that you can do it yourself…DIY!

Electrical Components – Best Brands to Use

This section of the Electrician Oklahoma City website covers various brands of electrical components like breakers, outlets, and wiring.

Most homeowners will limit electrical repairs to changing out a light switch or outlet, replacing a worn circuit breaker or perhaps rewiring an electrical device like a garden well pump or old lamp in need of a new electrical cord.

The most important thing to remember when doing these repairs, aside from general safety precautions when dealing with electricity, is to make sure you use the proper replacement parts.

Take a light switch for example. Most people would just run up to the hardware store and by a new switch. Many would determine what switch to buy based on price.

However, you need to make sure you get the proper switch for the job. What is the amp rating? Does your house have copper or aluminum wiring? Is it a standard switch or 3-way switch?

And what about replacing a breaker in your electrical panel? Do you know what type and brand to replace it with? You need to see who manufactured the panel and then use that manufacturer’s breaker.

In Oklahoma City, the most popular breaker manufacturers are: Square D, General Electric, Federal Pacific, Thomas and Betts, and Westinghouse. Here is a great website where you can type in information on your existing circuit panel box and it will tell you what breaker to order:

http://www.baybreakers.com/catalog/

When it comes to wiring, the most important consideration is to use the proper gauge. Wiring comes in different sizes depending on the circuit amp requirements and number of wires, or conductors. So, if you have a wire in your home that feeds a standard electrical outlet, it will have two conductors… the black wire which is the hot leg, and the white wire which is the neutral leg. It will also have a ground wire but this is not considered a conductor so is not used to label the wire.

Depending on how much current flows through the wire, it will be rated by size and the electrical industry uses a set of numbers to indicate this size like, #8 gauge or #12 gauge. They combine the wire size with the number of conductors and name the wire like that. So, a typical circuit might have a wire labeled, 10-2.

This means it is 10 gauge and has 2 conductors. It is absolutely vital to choose the right size wire for the amp draw of a circuit or appliance. If you are replacing the power cord for an appliance that is rated at 10 amps, would you know what size wire to use?

Here is a great site that has a chart for all the amp draws and wire sizes to use for those draws:

So, do your homework and get the proper components and make sure they are rated for your electrical requirements. You will be glad you did and can rest easy knowing you have done the job right!

How Your Electrical System Works

In this section of the Electrician Oklahoma City website we will go over an average home electrical system and how the electricity gets from your local electrical provider to all the various electrical appliances in your home.

Most residential homes in the US, and certainly the ones in Oklahoma City, have a main electrical line coming in from their power company to a meter on the outside of their house. This “line” actually consist of two 120 volt wires and a neutral wire. In the electrical biz, these two 120 volt wires are called “hot” wires.

From the electrical meter, the wires are routed into a main distribution area called an electrical panel. Depending on the size or electrical load of the home, you could have additional panels off the main one called “sub panels”. If you’re old school, you may call this panel a fuse box.

Inside your main electrical panel are safety devices called circuit breakers, or if your home is old school too, fuses. You will have a breaker (or fuse) for each circuit in your home. These circuits are called branch circuits. A typical branch circuit might feed all the outlets in a bedroom for example.

Most circuits in your home carry one hot leg of 120 volts, a neutral wire and a ground wire and are named, conveniently enough, 120 volt circuits. Other circuits carry two wires, each with 120 volts, and feed large appliances like your stove, water heater or air conditioner. These circuits are called 240 volt circuits.

The majority of things requiring electricity like lamps, televisions, toasters and your child’s Play Station video game console use 120 volts. You get this 120 volts out of the outlets that are located on walls throughout your home.

If you look closely at the electrical ratings on these devices however, you may notice that some are rated for 120 volts while others are rated for 115 volts or even 110 volts. What’s up with that?

Each of these electrical devices are designed to operate off of the standard voltage in your home, which of course starts out at 120 volts at the electrical
panel box. As the current flows through the wires to various outlets, the voltage drops a bit and as the electricity finally reaches the furthest outlets from the electrical panel you will lose a few volts which is completely normal.

The electrical current that flows through the wires in our home is measured in volts, amps and watts. Voltage is simply the pressure being applied to the electricity as it is being pushed through the wire… much like the pressure of the water being pushed through your water pipes.

And just like water, we can say that the amount of electricity being pushed through the wires is called wattage… with water it is gallons.

You get the amperage rating by dividing the voltage by the wattage. So, if you have a 120 volt lamp using a 100 watt light bulb you will be drawing .83 amps. Most of the circuits in your home can handle, depending on the wire and breaker size, 15-20 amps.

So, we are back to circuit breakers. Circuit breakers are important safety devices that will cut power to a branch circuit should it start to draw to many amps. To many amps can cause the wiring and electrical components to overheat and cause a fire.

So, when your teenage daughter has all the lights on in her bedroom as well as the television, stereo, computer, curling iron and blow dryer, you can see how each appliances amp draw adds up until you have reached the circuits capacity to deliver electricity and it trips a breaker.

Without circuit breakers and fuse protection, teenagers all across the world would be burning down their parents homes!

Now, you may have noticed that in your kitchen and bathroom there is an odd looking outlet that has its own safety device installed in it. It has a couple of buttons that you can push and will sometimes trip at the most inconvenient of times.

These outlets are known as GFCI outlets, or ground fault circuit interrupters. They are designed to protect people as well as the homes electrical system
and are used in areas where moisture is present… like in a bathroom next to a sink.

Should you happen to drop your blow dryer in a sink full of water, you will cause a short circuit and your typical breaker would overheat and shut off the electricity. However, if your foot was in that sink of water for some odd reason, a typical breaker would not trip fast enough to keep you from getting a heck of a shock!

That is what the GFCI is used for. It is mighty quick to fill the power should it detect even the faintest hint of moisture in the electrical system and you absolutely need to have these outlets in your bathroom as well as the kitchen. Yes, they cost a few more dollars but they can save your life!

Gutter Leaf Protection – Helping To Guard Your Home

One of the simplest and most practical ways to protect the roof on a home is to have some kind of gutter leaf protection in place on your gutter system. There are lots of ways to accomplish this, but in the end, the result is the same.

The styles of gutters are pretty much the same throughout the industry because they all fulfill the same goal and all are designed to use the same means by which to carry out the task. Slight variations will come into play when you see the appearance of the systems. This is where your options can be made as to the one that may give good result for your particular home in terms of materials and also the looks of the system on your house.

The general purpose of gutters is to allow water to continue moving off of the roof line and down and away from the framework of the home. The latter is of equal importance, because it will protect the foundation itself from undue erosion. Letting the water to settle close to a foundation is not only dangerous but it may endanger the stability of the house, which can lead to a plethora of disasters.

As the water is taken down from off of the roof and down the downspouts, it must be directed away from the foundation as far as it can be. This can be done by using flexible corrugated piping. The pipe is attached to the bottom of the downspout and continues the path for water to retreat.

The gutter leaf protection helps to prevent build up of leaves and twigs as well as other trash in the gutter system. If these did build-up, there would be no place for the water coming off your roof to move but right over the side of the gutters and ends up sinking into the ground where you don’t want it to be.

Another beauty of these gutter guards means less work each fall. If you live where dropping autumn leaves means clean up in the fall, you will probably be glad for something that lessens this chore. Just think of a gutter leaf protection system the same as an extra handyman.

As you can see, the gutter leaf protection is only a small part of the intricate network that has to be associated in the design of the roof. Just permitting the water to fall off of the sides of the home is not a great decision so this network allows the proper displacement without touching the aesthetic appeal of the home.

Home Exchange – More Random Tips

Home exchange, the relatively new phenomenon of swapping residences for a period of time by two travelers who want to go to the other’s place, is getting to be more and more popular these days. Judging by the proliferation of home exchange groups who facilitate these transactions, it seemed like the good idea had caught on.

Aside from the big savings in accommodations, swapping residences brings with it some fun, loads of adventure, and surprises one normally miss out staying in bland expensive hotels.

But finding your ideal swap mate can be difficult and tedious at times. And even if matters and issues have already been resolved and implemented, problems can still arise. As one old-timer says, a successful home exchange is a healthy combination of chemistry, flexibility, honesty, clear communication and some luck.

Checking, comparing and trying out some of the following random tips and guidelines might give both would-be guests and would-be hosts some help.

Communication is Key
Would-be exchange partners would do well if they are clear and accurate about the offer of their homes in the listing. Be honest but be polite. If your home is not child-proof, telling the other party would save time and effort right from the start. Both can move on and check out other would-be partners.

Partner with people of similar lifestyles
Offer to exchange with others who share a similar lifestyle or interest such as yours. An exchange where the homeowners and guests share a hobby has been known to lead to long-term friendships.

Your teenagers might also be more receptive to traveling with you if they can meet and hook up with others their age, even if they have different cultures.

Do’s and Don’ts
From the earliest part of the discussions (either face-to-face or in emails) it is advisable to establish parameters. These include hands-off rooms or closets, use of computers, cars, etc. It is good to be specific on matters such as who will foot the utility payments and other things like minor accidents using the appliances and the like.

Confirmations
Confirmations on all the agreed-on matter are very important. And they are useful if written down. People forget. Records stay on paper. Confirmations are also important on the final details of your arrangement.

Telling the neighbors
It is always good policy to inform the neighbors that you are lending your home to guests for the time you are away. Aside from potential untoward incidents or animosities, neighbors can be a big help to your guests.

Instructions and notes
Write down emergency numbers of local doctors and local police for the benefit of your exchange partners. Include written guides and other instructions on how to operate appliances and other equipments or anything else that need some explanation.

Additional guests
If you are the guests and there will be an addition to your party, it is common courtesy that you inform your hosts. A friend or a relative or two might pop up and join you at the last minute either for part or all of your stay. Tell your hosts at once and if the home can accommodate the addition, in most cases it shall be accepted.

Clean up after you
You owe it to your hosts to put the home back to its original state: clean bed sheets on the bed, clean towels in the bathroom, washed and dried dishes in their racks, scrubbed oven, etc.

Replace items that you used up, like washing powder, sugar, cooking oil, etc. If you swapped cars as well, be sure to leave it with a full tank of gas.

The Golden Rule
The Golden Rule might serve as a good reminder that while you are at your home exchange partner’s home, he is also living in yours. What you would expect him to do with your house, he expects you to do the same to his.

Home Exchange Is Better Than Time Share

Going on vacation gives you an opportunity to take a break from your hectic schedule. But sometimes looking for a place to stay can serve as a restriction for the place and duration of your stay. Home exchange gives you an option to veer away from the costly holiday villas and homes.
Are you familiar with time shares? Basically, the concept is the same but swapping homes can give you more benefits. To become eligible for house trading, all you need is a property and willingness to trade it with someone else.

When swapping your home with another family, there is no need to search for a similar house or apartment. All you need is to search for a location that suits your needs and caters to your interests. The practice of swapping homes is widely popular in major cities and developed countries such as the United Kingdom.

In addition, if your house is located in a vacation area or a huge tourist destination city, then finding a house that suits your needs can be a breeze. However, even if your house is located in the country, it is also easy to look for potential partners since most people living in the city would like to have a break from their hectic schedule.

People are used to spending their vacation in a hotel room that could eat up a large portion of your holiday budget. This is where you can benefit most from home trade as you can save the money intended for accommodation to spend for sightseeing, sumptuous dinners, engage in different activities, or go to expensive destinations.

In addition, staying in a home can also be an opportunity for cooking your own meals. You can also bring along your pet as most homes allow exchange of pets. You can save up on renting a car as well since swapping cars can also be negotiated.

Moreover, swapping homes is commonly practiced by single travelers, couples, and families. If you have a family member with small children, you can negotiate with a family with children of similar age. Retired individuals and employees with flexible schedules can greatly benefit from home trade since they can arrange their trip after finding a suitable home.

However, some people feel uncomfortable letting other people stay in their homes. In times you like these, the best remedy is to get to know your partner well and clear issues right away. You can do this by exchanging e-mail or photographs or chatting on the phone. If you want to reassure yourself, ask for a professional referral.

Moreover, you should also seek clarification on the issue of cleaning expectations since it is one aspect of the exchange that can be subject to misinterpretation. You can send a third party, such as a family friend, to check or conduct an ocular inspection before and after the home trade.

Going on a vacation is almost always the best opportunity for you to relax and take a break from your work or school. However, an expensive vacation can be a source of frustration rather than enjoyment on your part. But this does not have to be the case and you can always find a cheaper remedy.

Finding a place to go on a vacation need not be expensive. If you are tight on your budget, home exchange can give you an opportunity to have a memorable vacation.
